About Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra
Mata Vaishno Devi shrine is located in the Trikuta Mountains of Jammu & Kashmir at an altitude of 5,200 feet (1,580 m). Every year more than 80 lakh (8 million) devotees undertake this sacred pilgrimage. The yatra begins from Katra base camp, approximately 50 km from Jammu, and involves a 13 km trek to Bhawan (the main shrine complex). Pilgrims can also opt for helicopter service (Katra to Sanjichhat), battery-operated vehicles, ponies, or palkis on the route.
The three natural rock formations (Pindis) inside the cave represent Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati. Before starting the trek, every pilgrim must obtain a Yatra Parchi (RFID-enabled registration slip) — available free at the official counter or online at maavaishnodevi.org. The shrine is managed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB).
Peak crowd periods: Navratri (March–April & October), summer holidays (May–June), and Diwali/New Year. The best time for a comfortable yatra is weekdays during normal months (July–August or November–January outside festivals).
